"Dangerous Cadmium Found In Products At U.S. Retail Chains"

 

After years of outcry over lead in children's toys and products from parents and environmental groups, the Consumer Products Safety Commision now heavily regulates how much can be in any given item. But now a new filler, Cadmium, a known human carcinogen, has been found to take its place in jewelry imported from China.

 

"It's a nasty toxic metal," said Dr. Phillip Landirgan, Chairman of Community and Environmental Medicine at Mt. Sinai Medical Center.

 

An Associated Press investigation looked at children's charms and jewelry for cadmium levels – made by Disney, sold at Walmart, Claire's and dollar stores. The worst offender was a Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer charm, which was discovered to be 91 percent cadmium by weight.

 

Ashland University Chemistry chairman Dr. Jeffrey Weidenhamer tested 103 pieces of Children's Jewelry. It was bought in New York and elsewhere, most sold over the past few months...
